Ubuntu: Want to clear cache and obsolete package configuration?

This will definitely help make some space.

Here we go:

Configuration residues in directories/home

$ sudo dpkg --purge $(COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l | grep "^rc" | tr -s ' ' | cut -d ' ' -f 2)

Clear packages stored in cache

$ sudo apt-clean clean

Note: Act with caution. Once configuration files are removed, you will have to configure them all over again when installed. Alternative to these command lines you can also use some tools like Ubuntu-tweak. At the moment Ubuntu-Tweak 6.0 is still in beta and a lot flaky. So if not comfortable using command line, please wait till stable 6 is out.

Ubuntu tip: Slow boot with ATA errors?

Specially on Ubuntu 11.10 I experienced slow boot with 30 sec freeze. After looking into the boot log with dmesg, here is what found out:

ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
ata4.00: failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE
ata4.00: cmd a1/00:01:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 pio 512 in
ata4.00: status: { DRDY }

And here is the solution as suggested by Paul:

$ sudo sed -i '/ATAPI/,+1s/^/#/' /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo reboot now

Please act with caution. Backup the necessary files just in case. The solution worked well for me hence the post.

Tip: Want to disable addon compatibility check on Firefox 8?

1. Open the Firefox browser.

2. Write about:config in the awesome bar (aka address bar). Click “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button. This will open a list about Firefox not-so-secret configuration.

3. Right-click anywhere. Choose New > Boolean.

4. Enter extensions.checkCompatibility into the next window and click OK.

Update: Because of the rapid development of Firefox version, it seems that you have to change a bit of the code to accommodate the changes. Just use
extensions.checkCompatibility.5.0 instead for Firefox 5,
extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0 for Firefox 6,
extensions.checkCompatibility.7.0 for Firefox 7,
extensions.checkCompatibility.8.0 for Firefox 8,
and so on.

5. Select false value at the next window and click OK.

6. Once again, right click at anywhere, select New > Boolean, and click OK.

7. If it is, then you’re done! You can begin enabling your disabled add on, restart your Firefox, and voila! Your favorite extension is back!

Ofcourse you need to add the same via Time & Date settings...

And also if your login screen is broken or doesnot come up because of recent switch from gdm to lightdm, boot using a live cd, then mount the partition ubuntu is installed, chroot to it, then install lightdm-gtk-greeter. This will fix the issue.

Example below (assuming you have booted via live cd and then opened a terminal after making internet connection is enabled and your ubuntu partition is /dev/sda3):

$ sudo mkdir /media/test
$ sudo mount /dev/sda3 /media/test
$ sudo chroot /media/test
# apt-get install lightdm-gtk-greeter

Once the above package is installed. Reboot back into your ubuntu partition and things should work as normal.

If you dont like lightdm, you can switch to gdm as well. Just follow this article from webupd8.org.

System Spec is a self contained standalone EXE which can be run without installing. It lists a specification of your Windows PC without listing lots of useless memory address and unnecessary information.

New Features for 3.26
=====================
[3288341] Autotype has been added to the DragBar. Drag the image to an
input area on another Window (e.g., Browser) and PasswordSafe will
begin Autotype from there.
[3286721] User can now toggle between read-only and read-write modes
via a menu item or by double-clicking on the current R-O or R/W
indicator in the Status Bar.
[3203152] The displayed language can now be changed via the new
Manage->Change Language menu.
[3065111] Add/Edit now displays both the Application's (PasswordSafe) and the
current database's default Autotype string (if set via Manage->Options).
[2964804, 1855389] The user can specify the list of symbols valid for
password generation, and can override this for any particular
entry (except when EasyVision or Pronounceable passwords are chosen).
[1831893, 1471134] Added Autotype code "\s" to send "Shift+Tab" (back tab).
[] Allow user to control copying of the password to clipboard when
performing "Browse to URL" via an option in Options->Security. This is
a database option i.e., you can have different setting for different
databases.
[] Support importing of TXT, CSV files and XML exported from KeePass
V1 and KeePass V2 XML files. Note that KeePass V2's export in the V1
format is does not conform to their own format as specified by their
V1 product and can not be imported. Please review our Help file for
the settings in KeePass required during their export.

[] Polish installation texts added thanks to Michal Niklas.
[] An entry's password expiry date is set or cleared directly rather than using
the Set and Clear buttons after changing values.
[] The default password generation policy is now for 12 character
passwords that include symbol characters (previous default was 8, no
symbols).
[] Unknown database header fields and unknown entry fields are no
longer exported when a database is exported to XML as there is no
mechanism to re-check them during import. Exporting to XML and then
importing to a new database can be used to remove these unknown
fields.
[] Date time fields, when exported to XML, now are in the W3C dateTime
standard format instead of PasswordSafe's. This release can import
XML files with date time fields in either of these forms. The next
release will only be able to process the W3C standard.
[] Fully support importing of TXT files exported from KeePass V1
including the Group Tree structure, URL and date time fields. Please
review the online help for more details.

Bugs fixed in 3.26
==================
[3325116] Users can no longer select an entry via the System Tray
icon's Recent Entry menu if the display has not been restored after
minimize or unlock.
[3306357, 3062632, 2888026] User preference changes are now correctly
saved. This includes allowing user to change database preferences when
the database is read-only.
[3303018] Filters with quotes in their name are now correctly
exported, imported and displayed in the Manage Filters dialog.
[3301904] Export XML, export Text and the export of filters functions
now process file names and paths containing non-Latin characters. In
addition, missing directories in the specified path are created as
neeeded.
[3234204] PasswordSafe no longer exits if the command flag is set to
"-s <databasename>".
[3088187] The correct entry in List View is now used for Autotype when
using the keyboard to select the entry when PasswordSafe first opens.
[] Controls in Edit are now disabled if entry is protected.
[] Compare databases now correctly compares the 'Protect' and password
policy 'symbols' fields of entries.

This build comes with Linux kernel 3.0.1. By default only two desktop environments are available i.e. Ubuntu and Unity 2D but you can install gnome shell with the following command:

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

After installation, when you reboot, you will have all the 3 choices i.e. two above and gnome shell.

You can take away applications or files & folders icons by following commands in the terminal:
sudo apt-get remove unity-place-applications
sudo apt-get remove unity-place-files

Logout and come back or reboot, and you wont see the icons on unity anymore. Hope this helps.
